Cubic Zirconia and DiamondsCubic zirconia are not found naturally but are man made from zirconium oxide. The process was developed fairly recently (the 1970s) by the Russians. A very high temperature is needed, which was only made possible by the invention of the microwave oven.
Cubic zirconia are heavier than, but not as hard as, diamonds which are composed mainly of carbon. Visually the two are virtually indistinguishable, but diamonds are far more expensive, hence the popularity of cubic zirconia!
Coloured cubic zirconia are produced by adding different metal oxides during the manufacturing process to produce lovely vibrant colours, blues, reds, pinks and greens.
